A wolf is not exactly the type of animal you'd like to meet on a dark night, let alone a moonlit night. But that's just what our researchers had to do, and luckily they got away with it. Wolves spend most of the day hunting and arguing with each other, and only let themselves go in the night when the air is calm and the moon is out. Then they howl. If you listen carefully, you may be able to tell the difference between a howl and a laugh. They like to tell amusing stories about the day's hunting to each other, which is the howling, and then they laugh. Here's the joke we heard, which got a great laugh: "What's for dinner, Mum?" "Moose." "And for dessert?" "Mousse." How they howled the punchline! "Moowoowoowoowoose!" Click on the picture above to listen.
