When people hiss, they don't like something. When snakes hiss, it's quite the opposite. So snakes actually laugh quite a lot. Or rather, they hiss a lot. The trick is in guessing which hiss is a laugh. If you can trick a snake into thinking that they've bitten you, it will laugh in sardonic pleasure. However, a thick glove which they can sink their fangs into will make them think that they've got you and you can get the laugh without any harm coming to you. Pity our researcher forgot to put on his glove in time. Still, he's made a full recovery now, though his leg still hurts from the fall in the kangaroo suit (see "Kangaroo").
