Africa is a real tough place to film. Endless days driving around in a jeep looking for wildlife, hiding out in the heat and dust, always on the alert for danger. (We already said this in the "Elephant" entry - ed.) So, when we decided to go to the zoo to get the elephant laugh, we thought we'd kill two birds with one stone and get the lions as well. The only problem is, in captivity, they sleep all the time. Captivity dulls the senses, and dull lions don't laugh. So we had to go to Africa after all. The best time to get them is after a kill when they've eaten and the sun is going down. That's when they're all "lion" around telling each other their lion jokes, like "Why did the lion sit at the side of the road?" "To get the zebra crossing." (Is this joke too British? The Kenyan lions understood it. There's colonialism for you.) Click on the picture above to listen.
