What do we mean by pathetic? Well, it's the type of laugh that's so lacking in any emotion, spirit, abandon, force or humour, that it defies any type of description other than "Pathetic". It's evocative of the sort of downtrodden office worker who feels the need to laugh when his overbearing boss tells a really awful joke. It sums up the whole situation. It wasn't difficult to find the right office and the right candidates, so we secreted a microphone under the desk and got a variety of laughs (is there a variety of pathetic laughs?), of which this is the best.
